It could be either of those things, honestly. Both of my kids were/are breastfed on demand. My 2 year old NEVAH slept through the night until he was just about a year old - in fact, the first time was the week he turned one. If he woke up and needed to go back to bed, it was time to nurse. And he co-slept with us until 9+ months (then was in his crib across the hall until he woke up and I'd pull him into the twin in his room and co-sleep the rest of the night). He was also a LEISURELY nurser - taking up to 45 minutes to finish his day-time feedings. At night, he'd prefer to stay on all night long.
Mikki - totally different baby. She's an "efficient" nurser. She eats for 5-7 minutes and is done. She rarely eats more often than every 2.5-3 hours. Tonight, it was going on 11:30 and she was still up (she's usually down for the night by 11 at the latest - but she sleeps late, too). I said enough, took her back, laid her down awake and patted her back a couple times and left. She's still asleep and probably won't wake until about 3:30-4. Yesterday, I nursed her and laid her back down in the cosleeper and she went right back to sleep.
The reason I tell you this is because I've done nothing different with either baby. THEY are what was different. (I'm gonna continue in the next comment so that I don't run out of space... sorry I'm wordy.)
